Why DeWalt roofing nailers won the cordless category

Cordless first by design

DeWalt got into roofing nailers the right way. They did not bother with a pneumatic. The DCN45RN is a 20V MAX cordless coil roofing nailer that does most of what a Bostitch RN46 does, weighs about a pound more, and skips the compressor and hose.

If you already run DeWalt drills, impacts, and saws, this is the easy roofing nailer to buy. Same battery, same charger, same yellow toolbox in the truck.

DCN45RN — what to know before you buy

Released as DeWalt flagship cordless roofer, the DCN45RN is one of the most polished battery powered nailers on the market. It drives 7/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch coil roofing nails, weighs 9.1 pounds with a 4.0Ah battery, and includes a tool free depth adjustment dial that is actually accurate.

Real pneumatic feel trigger with no perceptible delay between pull and drive. Side load magazine reloads in under 5 seconds. Roughly 1,000 nails per 4.0Ah battery. Brushless motor, no brushes to wear out. And the same 20V MAX battery as half the rest of your kit.

Battery and pneumatic alternatives for DeWalt roofing nailers

The DCN45RN runs on any 20V MAX battery, but battery size matters for runtime. The 2.0Ah is fine for backup, the 4.0Ah is the all day workhorse, and the 5.0Ah or 8.0Ah extended packs let you skip lunchtime swaps. We cover the math in our DeWalt 20V roofing nailer guide.

DeWalt pneumatic roofing nailer line (the old DW45RN) is discontinued. If you want pneumatic at the DeWalt build quality level, the closest equivalents are the Bostitch RN46 and the Metabo HPT NV45AB2. Both are excellent pro grade pneumatic guns at similar price points.

Frequently asked questions

Does DeWalt make a pneumatic roofing nailer in 2026?
DeWalt's primary roofing nailer is now the DCN45RN cordless 20V MAX. The pneumatic DW45RN was discontinued years ago. If you find one new in box, it's a collector's item. Most pros who want a pneumatic at the DeWalt price point look at Bostitch RN46 or Metabo HPT NV45AB2 instead.
How many nails per battery on the DCN45RN?
About 600 nails on a 2.0Ah battery, 1,000 on a 4.0Ah, and 1,500 on a 5.0Ah. A 4.0Ah pack will get most pros through a typical residential square comfortably.
Will the DCN45RN drive 1-3/4 inch coil nails?
Yes. The gun handles 7/8" through 1-3/4" coil roofing nails. Hot-dipped galvanized, ring shank, and stainless all run fine. Battery life shortens slightly at the longer nail lengths because each shot uses more energy.
Is the DCN45RN good enough for production work?
For residential remodel, repair, and light production: absolutely. For full-day tear-offs on multi-family and commercial work, a pneumatic is still faster and cheaper per nail. The DCN45RN is the best cordless option but cordless and high-volume production are different jobs.
